We are deeply honoured and extend our deepest appreciation to Yang Berhormat Pehin Dato HajiZakaria Sulaiman, Minister of Communication in finding time to pen a few words in our BITEX ® magazine. Our deepest gratitude also extended to Yang Mulia Dato Paduka Hj Suyoi bin Hj Othman, Deputy Minister of Education, in consenting to officiate the BITEX® 2003 Exhibition and Trade Fair.

As is every year, I am pleased to affirm this year BITEX® is expected to be a great success. With the dedication of the working committee members and continued support from existing vendors as well as new ones, BITEX is set to further enhance Information Communication Technology awareness in Brunei.

This year's theme is a focus on Education. To further widen the knowledge of individuals in Brunei, education will need to form a strong basis for stability and growth, providing a foundation on which to adhere to. Add to this, vision and teamwork from dedicated individual, Brunei has every opportunity of being a strong influence and significant contributor in the ASEAN region for Information Communication Technology.

Brunei's access to Information Communication Technology is growing all the time with the advent of Internet providers adding to their services for making the web more attractive for newcomers, businesses and the public sector making way for ever changing technologies, the growing number of computers in peoples' homes, new technology schools and expanding curriculums; this can only add to an already flourishing economy.

This has made for big changes in the way we now live in our domestic lives and also how we do business. The I.T. boom of the early 90's has reached a settled stage and should now be perceived as a positive way of looking at how we can utilize what we have to the best potential. Now everything has become more focused.

PKBD will play a key role in this and will provide guidance to all areas. There will be public lectures to keep people informed of upcoming developments and what will be available for them. The International Asia Pacific ICT Awards (APICTA) 2003 will be held in Cairns, Australia this year and PKBD will be organising Brunei's contribution to this big event, putting forward our most talented computer professionals and students to represent the country. This is highly competitive and Brunei always fares well for awards as is evident from previous years events. We are also lobbying for APICTA 2005 to be held in Brunei and if we are successful, this will be a very exciting event for the country, not only for ICT but also for Brunei to be recognised as a business hub for Asia, as visitors and vendors will come from all over the region.

I am always delighted to see how PKBD can make its contributions and always welcome any new ideas from members and non-members alike. PKBD made an immediate impact when it first started in 1985 and has come a long way since. I hope with the increasing knowledge, people will recognise computers as an aid to their everyday life. I sincerely wish to extend my thanks to everyone who has supported PKBD and BITEX and hope its success will continue eternally into the future.
